From Uncertain Plans to Purposeful Impact: Maddox’s Journey in Education

That newfound passion led Maddox to enroll in education classes while attending Lake Orion High School. What started as curiosity quickly grew into conviction. Over the following year, he immersed himself in elementary and middle school classrooms, discovering that his greatest joy came from building relationships with students and helping them learn.

Today, Maddox serves as the Head Counselor at Upland Hills Farm Summer Camp, where every day is an opportunity to combine education, leadership, and adventure. Campers begin their mornings caring for farm animals, choosing hands-on activities, and exploring the outdoors. As Head Counselor, Maddox oversees camper safety, leads daily activities, supervises swimming as a certified lifeguard, and creates experiences that children will remember long after summer ends. Whether he’s teaching a cooking class, helping children conquer their fears on horseback, or building sandcastles at the lake, his favorite part of the job is always the same: forming meaningful connections with the children in his care.

Those relationships are where Maddox sees his greatest impact. He knows he’s making a difference when children eagerly run to join his activities, embrace new challenges, and grow in confidence throughout the summer. Families reinforce that impact through heartfelt notes, handmade gifts, and words of gratitude, reminding him that trust and encouragement extend far beyond the classroom or campgrounds. Whether in school or at camp, his goal remains constant: creating an environment where every child feels safe, valued, and supported.

Working with children has also taught Maddox that leadership carries tremendous responsibility. At camp, children’s freedom to explore the farm creates unforgettable experiences. But it also requires constant vigilance. Ensuring every camper is safe means knowing every child’s name, communicating closely with fellow staff members, and staying organized throughout the day. He has learned that great leaders balance fun with responsibility, remaining calm and attentive even when unexpected situations arise.

Each experience has helped Maddox grow both personally and professionally. He has become more patient, compassionate, and confident while developing skills in communication, classroom management, and lesson planning. Along the way, he has also learned to welcome constructive feedback, recognizing that every mentor, teacher, and supervisor has helped shape him into a stronger educator. Perhaps most importantly, he’s discovered that every child learns differently, and successful teaching requires flexibility, creativity, and empathy.

Maddox continues to learn every day. Whether supporting campers with unique developmental needs, resolving conflicts between children, or adapting to the unexpected challenges each new day brings, he embraces every experience as another opportunity to become a better educator and leader. His training through school-based placements, camp orientation, and especially his work toward earning the MI-YDA credential has strengthened his knowledge of child development, classroom management, and creating engaging learning experiences. He credits the program—and the mentors who supported him throughout it—with helping him become a more reflective, confident, and capable future educator.

His advice to anyone considering this career is simple but heartfelt: don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Building authentic relationships with children means stepping outside your comfort zone, joining their games, sharing their excitement, and showing them you genuinely care. While lesson plans and academic growth are important, Maddox believes it’s the relationships that leave the most lasting impression.

One memory perfectly captures why he loves this work. At the end of a school year, every student in one classroom wrote him a handwritten letter describing how he had impacted their lives and what they appreciated about him. Reading each note reminded Maddox that even small acts of kindness, encouragement, and patience can leave a lasting mark on a child’s life. In that moment, he knew he had found the career he was meant to pursue.

Maddox also hopes more people understand the unique value of out-of-school time programs. At Upland Hills Farm Summer Camp, children are given the freedom to choose activities that match their interests, explore nature, care for animals, create art, cook, and simply be kids. He believes children learn best when they’re engaged in experiences they genuinely enjoy. They can let go while also building confidence, discovering new passions, and creating memories that last long after camp is over.

For Maddox, education is about far more than teaching lessons. It’s about inspiring confidence, nurturing curiosity, and helping young people discover who they can become. His journey proves that sometimes the greatest purpose begins with simply saying “yes” to an opportunity and allowing that opportunity to shape a future dedicated to helping others grow.
