From After-School Participant to Program Leader: Mahmoud’s Journey in Out-of-School Time Education
Published October 14, 2025 as a part of the Career Exploration Tool: Stories from the Field series. This series of stories brings to life the many pathways members of Michigan’s early care and education field have taken to achieve their goals, nurture their interests, and achieve success.
For Mahmoud, the decision to work in out-of-school time programs was deeply personal. Growing up, after-school programs provided him with a safe place to explore his interests, build friendships, and discover who he was outside of the classroom. Those experiences left a lasting impression—and planted the seed for a career dedicated to creating that same kind of support for today’s youth.

Mahmoud’s path wasn’t linear. He first started working with students as a tutor and mentor, roles that quickly revealed his love for helping others build confidence and succeed. From there, he took on greater responsibility—eventually transitioning into program coordination and leadership roles. Today, as a Multi-Site Leader, Mahmoud focuses on building safe, engaging, and enriching environments that support students beyond school hours.
His days are dynamic and full of purpose. From preparing program spaces and checking in with staff to supporting students with homework and enrichment activities, Mahmoud wears many hats. He manages schedules, communicates with families, and ensures that everything—from logistics to learning—is running smoothly. The variety keeps him energized, but the most rewarding moments are those when he sees students light up with pride, joy, or understanding.
“I get to watch them grow both academically and socially,” he says. “When families know their children are safe, engaged, and supported after school, it builds trust and strengthens our community.”
Balancing so many responsibilities—supporting students, guiding staff, managing logistics—can be challenging, but Mahmoud has met the complexity with strength. Staying organized, communicating clearly, and remaining flexible has helped him grow into a confident and effective leader. Along the way, he’s developed skills he never expected—particularly in conflict resolution and data management. Whether resolving tensions or tracking program outcomes, Mahmoud sees every task as part of a bigger mission to uplift children, families, and communities.
His education and early experiences in tutoring and secondary education laid the foundation, and his growth has continued through TEACH. The program provided him with valuable training in child development, instructional strategies, and culturally responsive practices—knowledge he was able to apply immediately to strengthen his work.
To those considering the field, Mahmoud offers heartfelt advice: “Be patient. Embrace every opportunity to learn, even the challenging ones. Relationships matter just as much as technical skills, so stay curious, ask questions, and remember that every experience helps you grow.”
One memory that stands out to him is a student who once struggled with confidence. Over time, this student not only began participating more, but even helped lead a group project. Watching that transformation reminded Mahmoud of why this work matters so much.
“I wish everyone knew how much goes into creating these environments,” he reflects. “It’s not just about homework help. We’re teaching life skills, building confidence, and offering positive outlets for creativity. The impact goes far beyond program hours.”
From a young participant to a leader shaping the next generation, Mahmoud’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of out-of-school time programs—and to the adults who dedicate their careers to making sure no child is left without support when the school bell rings.
